When Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen Beetle in 1938, he couldn’t have imagined that his creation would one day find its way into the sports car business. In fact, he had no intention of entering the car market at all. However, after Porsche’s first prototype for the Beetle was rejected by Volkswagen CEO Heinrich P. Kübler, he decided to design a new car that could be marketed to a different segment of the population. This is where Porsche’s tractors come in.

After years of development, Porsche debuted the Beetle Convertible—the world’s first sports car with an engine located behind the driver—in 1940. Porsche’s success in the sports car industry paved the way for a whole host of automakers who followed suit, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. So next time you’re considering buying a sports car, take a moment to think about who made it first: Ferdinand Porsche or some other entrepreneur.
